Here is the first Database that I created for the Cremeans family in the early 80’s. It was posted on my Cremeans family history website Cremeans.Net and drew on information that I had acquired over the years. Even though, some of the information of the later generations is currently out of date, it gives you a good look at the history of the Cremeans Family and their American Adventure!

(O) Cremin.
O Cruimin, Cremin in English, is exclusively a west Munster surname;
almost all the families so called are resident in Co. Kerry and Cork
or have recently migrated therefrom, though in the 1659 census they
were more numberous in the Co Limerick barony of Connelloe, which
adjoins these two counties. The tradition is that they are a branch
o the MacCarthys, and in that connection it is interesing to note that
in the Bantry district Matheson found the name Cremin interchangeable
with MacCarthy.
In various 16th century records such as the fiants and the “
Composition Book of Connacht’ the name MacCremon, MacKremin etc,
often appears in Co. Galway. This, however must not be confused
with Cremin of Munster, being in fact a clerk’s misspelling of
MacRedmond, one of the many aliases of the Burkes of Connacht
and still exant.

O’Cruimin – O Crumyne, Crimeen, Cremeen, Cremin, Cremen, Crimmins;
‘descendant of Cruimin(dimunitive of crom, bent); the name of a well-
known family in Cork, Kerry and Limerick; of West Cork origin, and
said to be a branch of the MacCarthys.

FROM CORK COUNTY LIBRARY
‘The families of Croimin or O Croimin are an ancient Cork family and were what we might describe as a church family in charge of Aghabullogue parish. Under ancient Irish Church Law which was in operation for many hundreds of years before the Anglo-Irish invasion of Ireland in the late 12th century and continued until the Reformation in the 16th century, certain families were exempted from paying tribute to their chiefs on their maintaining the local church and its clergy. These families were called ‘aircheannaig’ (anglicized ‘eireannachs’). The family of O Croimin provided many priests to the church at Aghabullogue before the Reformation. The family is still numberous in mid-Cork generally under the name Cremin but many variants occur. The traditional version of the MAC CARTHY CREMEEN family arises from the fact that the MacCarthys were very numerous in Cork County and in order to distinguish between them, it was – and still is – the practice to give the separate branches of the families nicknames. A certain MacCarthy who lived to the West of Bandon married a Cremin and the family were known as MAC CARTHY CREMEENS. There are still MACCARTHY CREMEEN families in West Cork. This family owned two castles one at Ballinascarthy and the other near Enniskeane. The remains of both are still to be seen. One member of the family was hanged in Cork in 1650 by the Cromwellian forces and at the Cromwellian plantations, all the lands were forfeit.”
Surnames of County Cork
by Tim Cadogan
IN HIS FREQUENTLY-CITED Special Report on Surnames in Ireland (1909),
Robert E. Matheson published a list of the 27 commonest surnames in County
Cork, based on their incidence in the index of births for 1890. With
several exceptions (O’Brien, O’Connor, O’Neill), these are all surnames of
County Cork ‘origin’, but it should be noted that only 12 of the 27 do not
occur among the commonest surnames in at least one other county. While
there has been no systematic modern study undertaken on numerical
strengths, there is no evidence to suggest that the surnames at the top of
Matheson’s list have changed, but there is crude evidence – based on column
inches in the Cork (021) telephone directory – to suggest that changes have
occurred in the order below the top three.
A different perspective on Cork surnames is provided by Diarmuid
O’Murchadha in his authoritative Family Names of County Cork (1985). In
setting out to provide essay-length sketches of the history of County
Cork’s principal families, O’Murchadha focused on the families which
influenced Cork history in the early modern period and whose history was
reflected in documentary sources. The criteria for his selection of the 50
surnames treated in his study excluded four of Matheson’s top 27. On
grounds of origin, he excluded O’Brien, O’Connor and O’Neill, and he
reluctantly was forced to exclude Kelleher only because the surname lacks a
documented historical profile on a par with other families included.
Matheson and O’Murchadha in combination provide a list of 54 ‘Cork’
surnames, but even that list excludes a plethora of surnames, both
indigenous to County Cork and relatively numerous, e.g. Linehan, Horgan,
Lucey, Coakley, Dennehy, Deasy, Keohane and Minihane to mention but a few.
At a further level of incidence, Matheson identifies 16 surnames which
appear in the 1890 birth index for County Cork only. Many of these are
surnames that provided the minimum five entries in the 1890 index, thus
meriting inclusion in Matheson’s principal list of surnames in Ireland.
These Cork-only names include Anglin, Bransfield, Dullea, Lordan,
Motherway, Santry – all surnames that are still extant and flourishing in
County Cork.
Origins
The historic origins and movements of many of the principal Cork family
names is conjectural, but, perhaps surprisingly, several of the most
numerous are relative latecomers to County Cork. The MacCarthys, the
O’Sullivans and the O’Callaghans, all of Eoghanacht Caisil stock, migrated
southwards into Counties Cork and Kerry in pre-Norman times, ousted from
their original lands in Counties Tipperary and Limerick by the aggression
of the Dál Cais. The O’Donovans similarly were displaced from what is now
County Limerick and by the thirteenth century had re-established themselves
in West Cork. The Crowleys, believed to be originally of Connaught origin,
were likewise late arrivals, who carved out a territory in the Dunmanway
area of West Cork. The MacSweeneys, gallowglass or professional soldiers,
were introduced from the north by the MacCarthys as late as the fifteenth
century. From longer established tribal groupings in County Cork, such as
the Corca Laidhe, the Muscraighe and the Eoghanachts of the Cork region,
emerged such family names as O’Driscoll, O’Leary, Cronin; Murphy; O’Mahony
and O’Keeffe, respectively.
The invasions of Norsemen and of Normans and the plantations of both
Elizabethan and Cromwellian times are also represented in the mosaic of
County Cork surnames. Cotter (from MacOitir, ’son of Ottir’) is now the
only family name of Viking origin numerous in County Cork. The Coppingers,
for centuries a significant force in Cork history, and also of Norse
origin, are no longer numerous in County Cork. The Norman influence is
significant however. Walsh, Barry, and Fitzgerald all feature in Matheson’s
list of most numerous surnames and, other Norman surnames such as Roche,
Condon, Barrett, Nagle and Cogan could not be excluded from the roll-call
of Cork names. Though the sixteenth and seventeenth century plantations
have added great variety to the range of Cork family names, only one such
surname – Kingston – can be considered very numerous in the county.
Nonetheless, surnames such as Good, Beamish, Swanton, Sweetnam, and Shannon
are still common among the farming communities of south-west Cork.
Rarities
The decline, disappearance and survival of some of the more uncommon Cork
surnames is an interesting study. Skiddy, a surname of Norse origin,
prominent in Cork municipal office up to the seventeenth century and
reduced to three persons in Griffith’s Valuation (c.1850), now appears to
be extinct in County Cork. Hungerford, of plantation stock from the
seventeenth century and respectably represented in Griffith’s Valuation
with 25 entries, appears, nonetheless, to be now extinct in the county
also. Likewise, Lavallin, notable seventeenth century land owners and still
represented by eight entries in Griffith’s, c.1850; Notter, a surname still
prominent in the Mizen Peninsula in the late nineteenth century, but
extinct in the county since the death some years ago of local historian and
genealogist Isaac Nash Notter; and Shipsey, a prominent name in ‘Carbery’s
Hundred Isles’ in the early twentieth century, though this latter surname
and family still survive in Ireland. Shipsey, incidentally, is given a most
original, probably apocryphal, derivation, according to West Cork
tradition.
The first Shipsey, the story goes, was a shipwrecked foreign sailor, whose
only intelligible words to his rescuers were ’ship, sea’.
Conversely, some uncommon Cork surnames survive where others have
disappeared. Northridge, of West Cork seventeenth century plantation
origin, identified by Matheson as occurring in Cork only, appears to be as
numerous today as it was in 1850, when it merited ten entries in the
Primary Valuation returns. The exotic sounding Shinkwin, deriving from the
English name Jenkin according to MacLysaght, appears to be in decline from
its nineteenth century level, but is still, happily, extant in Cork.
Incidentally, all 16 of the surnames identified by Matheson as occurring in
Cork only in the 1890 birth indexes are still extant in County Cork and in
most cases have spread further afield as a result of twentieth century job
mobility and internal migration.
Geographical Distribution
The geographical distribution of family names in County Cork as late as the
mid-nineteenth century (as evidenced in Griffith’s) and to some degree up
to the present day, is influenced by the historical territorial boundaries
of the families. From a practical genealogical viewpoint, however, several
of the commoner Cork surnames, are, and have been for generations, too
widespread in the county to make any generalisations. However, O’Sullivan
and Harrington are still strongly represented in Beara, where they were the
dominant surnames in the last century; O’Donovan, O’Driscoll and O’Mahony,
more widely spread nowadays, were core West Cork surnames in the nineteenth
century. Herlihy and MacSweeney are associated with the mid-Cork Lee
Valley, while O’Callaghan, Roche, Nagle, MacAuliffe and O’Keeffe are
resonant of North and North East Cork. Barry and Cotter, though widely
distributed, have strong associations with the barony of Barrymore in east
Cork. The less common Cork surnames, however, have strong geographical
connotations. Cadogan invariably has its roots firmly on the West Cork
coast around the Ilen estuary. Verling is synonymous with the barony of
Barrymore and specifically the Cobh area. Nyhan is native to East Carbery,
where the great majority of Lordans will also find their ancestral roots.
Garde, Loughlin and Sliney are surnames that immediately suggest the barony
of Imokilly in east Cork. The tendency to become more widely spread over
the county and further afield is less marked in these less common surnames,
which even today retain a very strong regional, even parochial connotation.
Secondary Surnames
The division of families such as MacCarthy, O’Donovan, etc., into branches
was a common and well-established feature of the more prominent families.
Thus, among the MacCarthys there were the McCarthy Mor, Muskerry and Reagh
branches, while the main branches of the O’Donovans were Clan Cathail and
Clan Lochlainn. However, at a level below this formal division, the use of
various nicknames was adopted to distinguish different families in an area
where the surname might be very common. Peadar O’Donovan on his Irish
Family Names (1991) identifies 34 nicknames or secondary surnames used by
the O’Donovans in West Cork. In Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa’s Recollections
(1898; 1972) in ‘A Chapter on Genealogy’, occurs the following passage: ‘My
great-grandfather Donnacha Rossa was married to Sheela ni Illean – Julia
O’Donovan-Island. They had six sons. Those six sons married into the
following families: Dan’s wife, an O’Mahony-Baan of Shounlarach; John’s
wife, a Callanan of East Carberry; Den’s wife a McCarthy-Meening of East
Carberry; Conn’s wife, an O’Sullivan Bua’aig; Jer’s wife (my grandmother),
an O’Donovan-Baaid …’
Many of these secondary surnames appear in records such as the Primary
Valuation and survive in local usage today. Some of them eventually – or
temporarily – replaced the principal surname. The surname Mountain
occurring in Griffith’s Valuation in the barony of Carbery is an agnomen
for O’Donovan or MacCarthy; Crimmeen or Cremin in the same area is a
MacCarthy agnomen, occasionally becoming the adopted surname. The West Cork
surname Whooley is an example of an O’Driscoll agnomen that established
itself as a surname. The practice of using these secondary names seems to
have been more common in the western part of County Cork than elsewhere.

The following tells of what Higgins Cremeans found we he made the journey to Mason County….
Information of interest – The Formation and history of Greenup County, Kentucky(formerly Mason County) taken from the History of Greenup County Kentucky by Biggs and Mackoy:
Greenup County was formed from Mason County in June of 1803. It extended from the Mason County line on the west to the Big
Sandy River on the east, and along the Ohio River for 40 miles. It was named for Christopher Greenup, who was born in Virginia in 1750, fought in the wars against Indians, and was a colonel in the Revolutionary War. He was prominent in the orgainization of the district of Kentucky, was a member of the first congress, Clerk of the Senate, and became Governor of Kentucky in 1804.
Early settlers came to Greenup County either by the Ohio River or overland by horseback and wagons. When they reached their destination there were no good roads anywhere. Even in the dry season travel was rough going. The first passable road was probably from the Big Sandy River down the Ohio. Shortly after the county was organized a road was laid off from Greenupsburg, the county seat, down the Ohio River to a line across from the mouth of the Big Scioto River in Ohio. The present highway practically follows the old road. When the many furnaces from the area were in operation the roads near them were improved by using the slag from the furnace on them. Streams were either forded or crossed by crude bridges constructed for temporary use. Later, wooden bridges wer built, and some of the covered ones are still in use. The Ohio River played an important part in the early transportation and settlement of Greenup County. The first travel on the Ohio River was by canoes which brought hunters and adventurers; but when settlers came, they wanted to bring their possessions with them, so rafts came into use. The rafts soon gave way to the flatboats, large enough to accomodate several families with the household necessities, and with shelter against the sun and rain. These were the boats that brought the pioneer settlers to Greenup. After the flatboats came the keelboats which were one step in advance because they could be poled or rowed back up stream instead of being sold at New Orleans. Another type of boat seen on the river about 1825 was the storeboat coming from Pittsburgh loaded with merchandise which called at the settlements to sell and trade with the people. When the steamboats came they carried passengers and freight, and the towboats carried large cargoes of different products.
The following is taken from an early account of the county’s resources as contained in Collin’s History of Kentucky:
Greenup county is rich in mineral resources, the iron ore being of a superior character and seemingly inexhaustible. Coal is also found in abundance. the hills are covered with timber and the water power is not excelled in the state.

“Peaceful Park Scene of Indian Outbreak. Beuty Spot Was Once Bloody as Blackshoe Tribe Swooped Down on
Men, Women, and Children and Killed Them”, by Cal. F. Young.
Copied from Microfilm in the Cabell County, WV
Library:
The Herald-Advertiser,
Huntington, WV,
Sunday morning, January 12, 1930
More than a score of men, women and children massacred on
Four Pole Creek, Ritter Park, by a band of Black Shoe
Indians, an off-spring of The Shawnee or Mingo Tribe.
Such a story would circle the globe within a few hours and
be printed in newspapers within a day in more than a score of
languages–as if it had “broken” yesterday, instead of 140
years ago.
There are evidences of the truth of the slaughter.
What is stated abve is reorted to hve taken place
about 1790, or early in the 1790’s.
Betty Tackett, a young woman living with her parents at the
junction of the Ohio and Guyan rivers, now Guyandotte, witnessed
the scene of the slaughter before the bodies were disposed of
and frequetly related the incident to members of her
family and relatives. Betty Tackett, as Mrs.Reuben Cremeans, died
in Mason county in 1884 at the age of 118.
Shopman Relates Story
A son, Henderson Cremeans, through whom much of the data
relative to the early inhabitants of Huntington, was brought
down to existing relatives, was well known in the Ohio Valley.
His death occurred in 1913 at the age of 115.
Our information comes through these two persons to Henry
R Bryan, 2344 Ninth Avenue, a night foreman at the Chesapeake
and Ohio shops. Some of the data Mr Bryan remembers having
heard Mrs. Reuben Cremeans (Betty Tackett) relate on visits
to the home of his parents in Mason County, to himself and
Henderson Cremeans, and as retold by Henderson Cremeans, to
Henry A Bryan. Of some of the incidents Mr. Bryan is not
certain of the exact date but he is certain as to the
incidents and the approximate dates.
According to the information thus obtained the first white
settlers in the Huntington section were the Tacketts–Mr and Mrs
Ambrose Tackett, one daughter, Betty and four sons. They
came from the waters of the Rappahannock in Virginia via the
New River to the Creek just east of St. Albans, now known as
Tackett’s Creek.
Talks With Cornstalk
Here the caravan of ox teams and many hogs encountered Indians,
who showed no diposition to be friendly and the Tacketts
headed down the kanawha River to Point Pleasant, reaching
there before the Battle of Point Pleasant on October 10, 1774,
in which Tackett participated against the Shawnees under Cornstalk.
At this time, Betty Tackett was about eight yeard old, having
been born in 1766. Betty was also present at the killing of
Cornstalk in 1777, and was reported to have frequently talked
with the great Indian chieftain, who she greatly admired and
whom she always had been mistreatd by the white men.
Following the battle between Lord Dunmore’s forces and the
Shawnees in 1774, and the killing of Cornstalk, the Tacketts
came down the Ohio to the junction of the Guyandotte and Ohio,
and built a home where now Guyandotte is situated.
Trips back and forth between here and Point Pleasant were
numerous. On one of these trips to Point Pleasant Betty frequently
related, she saw General George Washington.
Friendly With Indians
As handed down, the early trials of the Tackett family in
what is now Guyandotte, were varied. Tackett counted upon
this section as his future home. In most instances he and the
scattered Indian bands had few difficulties. About 1790, it is
related, a band of Red Hawks, with which Cornstalk’s son,
Elinipsico, at one time affiliated, were located at what is
now known as Indian – Guyan, opposite the Ohio from Guyandotte.
With this band the elder Tackett and his sons had numerous
and friendly dealings, frequently trading hogs to the
Indians. This tribe is claimed to have been a branch of the
Shawnees.
At the same time there was also a settlement of Indians on
the hill east of Guyandotte. Some of the old mounds are still
visible.
The exact date of the massacre on Four Pole is not definitely
fixed by the data available, but was either in 1790 or
within the next year of two. Just when this white band settled
on Four Pole and erected their block houses, is also lacking,
except they were not there when the Tacketts reached the
junction of the Guyan and Ohio and the immediate year thereafter.
It is known that the white band had erected a number
of block houses and had taken precautions against an Indian attack.
White Coloy Attacked
These precautions were neglected on a hot summer day and
the double barricades to the houses were left open.
Apparently watching for an opportunity the Indian band of
Black Shoes swooped down and completely annihilated the white
colony. Children were picked up and swung about, their brains
being smeared about the trees. every one of the colony was
either killed or later died from injuries received in the conflict.
It was from the injured that the Tacketts got their story.
The Tackett family witnessed the scene immediately after
the attack and saw the bodies scattered about the stockade.
Betty and her son, Henderson Cremeans, are reported to have
frequently related. Henderson’s story coming from his father,
mother and uncles.
In 1797 Betty Tackett married Reuben Cremeans from what is
now Mason County. She is said to have been the first white
woman married west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The ceremony
was performed by an army chaplain at Point Pleasant.
Almost immediately the Cremeans took up their abode near the
junction of Muc river and Lower Creek, about one mile from
the present town of Milton in this county.
Felled Indian iwth turnip
In 1820 the family moved to Mason County, locating on Knife Branch
of Guyan Creek.
Henderson Cremeans, a son of Reuben and Betty, was born
in 1798. He died in 1913, aged 115 years. Until a few years before
his death he ws very active and frequently visited the
scenes of his parents’ early life.
Like most frontiersmen, Henderson was of a rugged type and
able to give a good account of himself in any kind of an encounter.
While a resident of Mud River Henderson was attacked by three Indians
while gathering turnips. With a turnip he felled one of the
Indians and sprang on him and soon finished the Indian off.
The others escaped. These were the last Indians seen in
that community. This experience was related with a
certain degree of satisfaction
by Henderson.
Mr Bryan stated that both Betty and her son Henderson,
who was Mr Bryan’s uncle, enjoyed relating their early
experiences. Expecially would the latter enjoy relating
the exeriences of his mother as she had related them to him.
Saw Buffalo in River
Among some of the experiences were the activities of the
Buffalo when the family resided at what is now Guyandotte,
She told of having seen droves containing as many as 75
buffalo and swimming the Ohio river at that point. The
only land routes in those days were the Buffalo Trails. That
is all they had to follow over the Blue Ridge Mountains
into the New and Kanawha River Valleys, and on to the Ohio
they would declare.
What is now known as Reservoir hill, was named Panther
Knob by the Tacketts A disturbance among the hogs one night
was found to have been caused by a panther, but that fact
was not definitely known until the next morning when the animal
was found in a tree top where it had been chased by a number of
dogs. The Tackett boys secured one of their flintlocks and killed
the panther. The animal measured eleven feet from tip to tip.
thereafter the hill was known as Panther Knob…

There are a number of different names shown for this person. On one of Hiram’s pension papers his name looks like Abuid, the 1880 Carter County Census lists him as Bida, relatives remember him being called Bird, and his grave stone lists him as A.B. I think his name was Andrew Bird Jones and the Abuid and Bida are translation errors. His Grandfather Stephen Jones was born in Harlan County and the Andrew Bird Jones from Harlan County is possibly Stephen’s brother and who A.B. was named for.

Henderson Cremeans
“The Mason Republican” Dated Friday, Jan 29, 1909
“Henderson Cremeans, died near Glenwood, this county, at the advanced
age of 115 years.
At the time of his death, he was strong and hearty-in fact he was
walking along the road, on his way home from the store, when he died.
For several years he had been making his home with his grandson,
Clark Cremeans.
His father and mother are said to have been the first couple married
west of the Blue Ridge mountains in Va. His mother died at the age of
120 yrs; his wife at the age of 100 yrs.
In the year 1812 Henderson Cremeans, then a youth of 18 years went
with his uncles along an Indian trail through the woods to the Ohio
River at a point near where Glenwood is now located, where his uncles
crossed the river bound for the war of 1812, and Henderson returned home
with the horses.
Mr Cremeans has lived in 3 centuries, being born in 1794, and living
until Jan 21, 1909.
It is thought that Mr Cremeans was the oldest man living in the
United States. He was born and raised in what is now called Mason Co,
WV and spent his entire life in this community. He has seen this
country change from a wilderness to its present modern state.
He had 9 children, 60 grandchildren, 131 g-grandchildren, and 17
gg-grandchildren.
Lee Harper of this city, was called upon to take charge of the remains.
The funeral was held at Fairfield church, Sat, Jan 23rd, at 11 a.m.
There were about 600 people present to look for the last time on this
venerable figure which had so long been familiar to them in their
daily walks of life. The interment was in the churchyard at Fairfield,
and may the earth rest gently upon him.”

By Gary Cremeens:
“I would say that this is the one and only “Elkanah Cremeens”.”
“I believe that Elkanah Cremeens was buried beside his Wife Nancy Canterbury at White Cemetary near Gallopolis, Ohio, since there is a depressed area next to her grave, and nothing else makes any sense. Elkanah died within a very short distance of the cemetary where Nancy is buried. He had children living in the same area. There is no way that his children would have buried him any place else!”
